Voting FAQ
How do I register to vote?
The Turbovote tool can help you get registered easily and quickly.
How do I register without a driver’s license?
Registration ID requirements depend on the state and whether registering online, in-person, or over mail. If registering online or in-person, make sure to check with your Secretary of State’s website in order to find out the registration ID requirements. If using the national mail-in voter registration form, all states that allow for use of the national mail-in voter registration form allow for your Social Security Number and state identification number to be used in place of driver’s license number.
How do I know if I’m registered to vote?
Use the Turbovote tool or state’s websites! Check out our handy Voting Information page that will link to your Secretary of State site, where there will be an option to check your registration status.
How can I change where I’m registered?
De-register in one state and register in another. Use the Turbovote tool to register in the new state after you de-register in the former state. This can be done through your Secretary of State’s website, which is easily accessible through our Voting Information page.
Can I vote if I’m studying or living abroad?
For U.S. citizens living abroad in the fall, consult these guidelines from the State Department. Start at the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) website, where an online assistant walks you through the process. You can also pick up a copy of your state’s requirements from U.S. embassies and consulates around the world, or from many overseas U.S. citizen civic or political groups.
If I’m a person voting in Illinois, what do I need to bring?
If you are not yet registered to vote in Illinois and wish to vote and register in-person, you must bring a photo ID and proof of residence. Your UChicago ID and campus bill are two items that fit those requirements. If you are not yet registered to vote in Illinois and wish to vote and register online or by mail, you must still bring a photo ID if you do not provide ID when you registered by mail. If you are registered to vote in Illinois and wish to vote in-person, then you do not need to bring anything.
How do I change the address where I’m registered (within the same state)?
If you move within your state, you can update your voting information by visiting the Turbovote tool, entering your current registration information, and choosing the option that states that you have moved since registering to vote. You’ll then be directed to change your address using your state's guidelines.
